Store Set-Up and Design
Great choice for intermediate to expert users with stores selling 25+ products and under 4MM in sales.
The Good - CoreCommerce is innovative, has won many awards, and is strong with customer support. Historically, CoreCommerce has had one of the easiest admin areas in the industry and a ZippyCart favorite! Their extensive eCom experience continues to shine with their user-friendly tools and layout.
The Bad – The overload of features is great for some but can be very overwhelming to an eCommerce newbie. Additionally, the control panel and general admin experience could use a bit of freshening up.
Cool Features – Everything you’d expect from a leader in eCommerce, including over 50 payment gateways and over 100 FREE themes. They are also one of the most secure solutions on the market. Dream It. Build It. Make It Happen… we like their motto and the software behind it.
Store Setup and Design
The store setup and design options in CoreCommerce shopping cart software has always been a ZippyCart favorite and this year is no different. With an easy-to-use setup wizard, access to HTML and CSS (through FTP), over 100 free templates and more than 100 icons and button options, CoreCommerce continues to stay at the top of our ranks in store setup and designs.
Last fall, CoreCommerce was one of the first eCommerce solutions to offer free responsive design themes, and that’s something to applaud. You should always look for a responsive design template for your online store as these fluid designs ensure your website adjusts to fit many different device screens. This will make it look great and work properly on a home pc, tablet, or a smart phone. Now if only the control panel looked as great as their designs do.
All CoreCommerce templates come with preloaded data, which can be a good or bad thing, depending on your need. The ZippyCart team likes to see considerations of this nature as we consider them to be more accommodating for users of all levels. You may want to skip their site navigation setup options, however, as they can get a bit confusing. If you have a creative side and some extra time, take a turn with their free “Logo Creator” and numerous add-ons.
Editing the template you select can be something of a challenge. You can edit colors and fonts through the Fonts, Borders and Colors page under the Design Tab, or access the CSS. Of course, accessing the CSS requires some technical understanding. If you don’t have that, you’re editing ability will be limited. Overall we think the experience of designing your site could use some improvements. As we we’re making changes we felt like we had to keep moving back and forth between pages, not a really good experience.
We thought the newer templates looked great, but the older ones could use some updating.
When it comes to internet marketing, CoreCommerce makes sure to provide you with the tools you’ll need to manage your URL’s, titles, and more. Unfortunately, they generate the same URL for every link you add. While they instruct you to change these, the ZippyCart team is worried a novice won’t realize the importance of unique URL’s and overlook that task in the excitement of setting up their new store.
CoreCommerce can integrate with many of the top eCommerce marketing tools on the market. We were particularly impressed with their Facebook integration and documentation. With just a little extra work, you can easily start selling on your own Facebook storefront.
If you’re into affiliate marketing, you’ll be happy to hear that last summer, LinkShare integration was added, making it easy for CoreCommerce merchants to track customer visits and affiliates.
Security is obviously one of CoreCommerce’s priorities as their software is PCI compliant (Trustwave March 11, 2014) and taps into CloudFlare for additional protection against DOS attacks (with additional fees), includes daily backups, and the ability to purchase SSL’s through GoDaddy for $28 per year. If you’d rather, you can also use their shared certificate. The options meet and/or exceed what the ZippyCart team expects when it comes to shopping cart security.
Product and Store Management
CoreCommerce works with over 60 payment gateways and offers a very robust features set for setting up products, vendors and inventory. They obviously work towards cutting setup time with details liker real-time shipping carriers, label printing for UPS, USPS, and FedEx, and Quickbooks integration. While we didn’t see a product image editor, you have great zoom features and can add as many product photos as you’d like and use different images for the thumbnail, main photo, etc.
We were a bit disappointed to see that the CoreCommerce team relies on 3rd party vendors for important features such as cart abandonment and cart re-engagement. Fortunately, the company they use is called Abandon Aid, which prices based on revenue recovered. That basically means you’ll only be paying additional fees when you know you’ll be recovering the revenue, which is really amazing.
Importing and exporting features found in the admin panel make upgrading to CoreCommerce a breeze. In general, this is a company that is forward thinking and has spent years developing a shopping cart that will please many different types of online business owners. They have everything a SMB would need, including upselling, coupons, gift certificates, product comparison, and more.
CoreCommerce understands the importance of good customer service and their team has a solid presence that won’t keep you waiting long for help. From our experience and what we’ve snooped around the web, they are extremely reliable and even use customer suggestions when considering new features. Here are your contact options:
- Contact support by phone: Mon-Fri: 24 hours a day, Sat: 8am-5pm, Sun: Closed
- Contact support by chat: Mon-Fri: 24 hours a day, Sat: 8am-5pm, Sun: Closed
- Submit a ticket: 24 hours a day, 7 days a week
- Sales: Mon-Fri: 8am- 5pm
With 4 package options to choose from and a wealth of eCom tools, we consider CoreCommerce to be a good value and one of the better shopping cart solutions. Their packages run from $29 to $199 monthly, with the beginner level allowing 150 products, 5 email accounts and no transaction fees. They do offer custom design services and add-ons that can get pricey. For the feature set that’s included, however, CoreCommerce is a great choice in eCommerce solution software.
We took at look at what other reviewers and customers said about CoreCommerce and generally the comments were positive. It ranked anywhere from a 3.5-5 ( out of 5 ) on most sites, averaging high. As with most solutions, we did find some complaints that should be noted.
- Dated Control Panel – As noted in our review, it’s time for a facelift. Improving the UI and the overall experience could really help this eCommerce solution.
- No “Drag and Drop” Mode – CoreCommerce doesn’t have a “drag and drop” designer and it requires some technical expertise to fine tune the design. If this is a concern, you may want to take a look at the customization and design service they offer.
