While most men may think that women are the bigger online shoppers, it is in fact the men who as of late in the UK are outspending women online. Men have typically stayed away from doing most of the household shopping, but with the popularity of online shopping men are feeling more comfortable and in control of their shopping experience. PayPal recently reported findings from a survey that indicated men in the UK have spent around £600 more than women on online purchases in the past six months. No reports have confirmed that this trend is similar in the U.S. but it is still interesting to see men increase their online spending despite rough economic times. The report also stated that, of the 12.9 million UK men shopping online, their main focus of spending has been on travel and financial services. Their average £672 difference in spending is significant compared to women in every online category except groceries and clothes.
With London accounting for a very large portion of UK Internet traffic it makes sense that people who live in a very busy and expensive city would be pressed for time and enjoy the convenience of online shopping carts. Online shopping allows men who live a fast paced lifestyle to be even more efficient with their time by being able to easily browse thousands of online stores and compare prices. However the report also found that women are slightly savvier when they shop online and do a better job of tracking down deals. Considering this, the online spending men do may be inflated because they do not work hard to find the best price. Carl Scheible, managing director of PayPal UK, said: “The online revolution has turned men into shopaholics. We love the quick and efficient nature of the Internet, especially when it comes to buying technology and gadgets.”
