While most people tend to think of Christmas as the biggest time for online shopping, it so happens that some specialty ecommerce stores view Halloween as their busiest time of the year. This is one of the biggest reasons Party City, America’s largest party specialty retailer debuted their new online store at PartyCity.com. They wanted to offer consumers an amazing shopping experience with a huge selection of products like adult and children costumes, accessories, scary decorations, and spooky party items. In addition they carry party supplies and decorations for all events and holidays.
Party City is the only big online player in the space outside of Wal-Mart to also have traditional retail stores with over 600 nationwide. Their most direct online competitors have slightly different strategies with the first being CelebrateExpress.com who is best known for their online store presence and OrientalTrading.com who is most known because of their mail order catalog. All of these sites place huge hopes on Halloween as it is a very popular US holiday where people tend to buy new outfits each year. This is especially true for kids who, as they grow older, always want to be something new each yer which entails buying a new costume.
The online shopping arena lends itself so well to Halloween shopping as it is hard for any one traditional retail store to survive year round and only sell one genre of item. Those stores that do remain successful are usually only in big cities and are still not as easily accessible as the online shopping experience. Only time will tell if the economy will have a negative effect on shopping this Halloween season, but Party City hopes the new site will come out on top.

Seems like competition for this kind of site is pretty stiff. What do they plan to do different so that they have an edge.
