Retail giant Walmart has spent decades establishing itself as the go to big box retailer in many cities across the United States. Now it appears they are dedicating efforts to increase their online presence with the addition of over 1,000,000 products to the newly launched Walmart Marketplace.
Extensive product selection improvements have been made to some of their most popular online categories like Home, Baby, Apparel, Toys and Sporting Goods. The addition of products comes from various partnerships they established this year and plan to partner with more retailers over the next year which allows them to continue to expand their product catalog. On top of the product expansion, the company is also expected to roll out new programs within the next year to aid in increasing online sales. All transactions through the Walmart Marketplace will take place in the same trusted and secure shopping cart checkout process that Walmart.com uses for their own product line.
Seattle based online retailer leader Amazon.com now has another serious threat to watch out for as Walmart expands. However, Walmart has a big up hill battle if they want to give Amazon a run for consumers money. Amazon was the top online retailer per the 2008 Internet Retailer Report with approximately $20 billion in online sales versus Walmart coming in 14th place with only $1.7 billion in online sales. If the program is extremely successful it could give Walmart a small boost, but with a massive $18 billion difference in online sales last year it will be some time before they can close that gap.
