The Kindle from Amazon.com quickly become an online sales hit when it debuted in November of 2007. It revolutionized a market that had no real momentum and now the Kindle has expanded to offer over 300,000 ebook titles. In less than two years, Amazon has continued to innovate releasing three different editions of the product with the Kindle DX for $489 debuting this past June. Kindles have continued to be a very hot seller, but there is a lot of competition gunning to grab their piece of the eReader market. Applied market intelligence company iSuppli released data that indicated the Kindle controlled 45% of the eReader market, with Sony being a close second controlling 30% of the market. Sony has two eReader models out right now with the Reader Touch Edition™ for $299 and the Reader Pocket Edition™ for $199.
With the eReader market predicted to grow tremendously over the next 5 years, there are a few companies looking to get into the battle very soon. Barnes & Noble recently announced deals to work with Plastic Logic to power the eBookstore for their eReader device. Last month they announced a partnership with Irex Technologies who is a Dutch eReader manufacture which will provide them an eReader which they will sell in stores and online later in the year. There are also rumors that iRiver is set to release their own eReader device later this month. As competition picks up Amazon will have to do everything it can if they want to become the go to eReader people want to buy.
