As part of American Eagle Outfitters commitment to customer connection, they announced this week the launch of their mobile commerce store. Already very popular with the 15 year old to 25year old demographic, they want to continue this trend by being everywhere their customers are via their mobile phones. Shoppers will now be empowered and enabled to browse and purchase items via their mobile phone. On top of that, there is also expanded functionality on the www.ae.com site for customers like wish lists and an easier store finder. This is not an app as many other online retailers have launched, but an enhanced website experience. Despite the mobile commerce industry being in its infancy in the United States, it is crucial to build a following at a young age with early adopters as they will spread the good praise about the brand.

With the popularity of smart phones among teens and the release of the new Itunes 9 store, ring tones and apps have been one of the fastest moving segments of mobile commerce, but slowly more consumers are shopping for bigger items. Travel products, movie tickets, and pizza are some of the current popular items teens shop for online. Due to complications with different types of smart phones and browsers, it has not been very easy for major retailers to bring their mobile commerce strategy to market. As customer demand increases for mobile commerce it will force retailers to figure out a way to give their customers what they desire.
