As ecommerce growth has slowed due to the economic recession, many large Internet retailers look to increase online sales via a variety of techniques. While many have redesigned their websites or improved their shopping cart experience, some have created new lines of ecommerce. Salt Lake City based Overstock.com looks to improve their online sales with a website to launch by Halloween that allows businesses to make bulk purchases. While Overstock was originally intended to target suppliers, their success has come more so from individual consumers looking to put a great deal in their shopping cart. Only a very small percentage of their online sales come from suppliers looking to obtain a bargain, but the hope is the new site will help grow their market share. Not only will businesses be able to easily buy in bulk online, they will also be provided with bulk discounts to try and lure them into making a purchase. Only time will tell how popular this site will become and what type of companies will benefit most.

Even though the new Overstock site set to launch was built on existing infrastructure, it still is reported to cost around $1 million dollars. This kind of investment from Overstock along with other company improvements during a recession, show the commitment Internet retailers have to long term success. Recessions have been known as a perfect time for entrepreneurs to take calculated risks by launching new businesses. Internet retailers have the same strategy in mind, banking on a successful economic recovery that will result in strong sales which will off-set their investment.
