McAfee recently completed a study entitled Digital Window Shopping where they concluded that approximately 65% of all online shoppers come back after one or more days to finalize the purchase. So this may look like shopping cart abandonment, when in fact it is not, but most online retailers do not have an easy way to pick up on that level of detail in their analytics or they do not know how to look for it. Many feel that with the bumpy economy this indicates that online shoppers are more cautious in their purchasing decisions and that they might want to do a bit of research before they complete their purchase.
Another interesting finding from the study reported that sales conversions were 11% higher for the digital window shoppers who were shown some sort of security cue. This is most likely a result of increased confidence that the transaction that the shopper is about to make is safe and secure. Security concerns are, however, a reason why customers will abandon their shopping cart and never come back to your online store. If they do not feel that their personal information and credit card details are being transmitted securely they they are unlikely to want to move forward with doing business at your online store. So if you are an owner of an online store and you do not currently have a proper security partner you should look at doing that right away so you can reduce shopping cart abandonment and capitalize on the holiday shopping season.
