Sweden based retailer Hennes & Mauritz AB better known as H&M has finally announced plans to launch an online ecommerce store for UK shoppers. H&M fans can currently shop online in a handful of European countries like the Netherlands, Germany, Denmark, and Norway. Shoppers in the US have been enamored with H&M since their debut in 2000 in New York. Currently the US has 175 H&M retail locations and their popularity continues to rise as they open new store in different parts of the country. Despite this growth there still has not been any mention of an online storefront for USA. There are tons of threads in many forums wondering why H&M has not been able to bring an online shopping experience to the US yet.
Seeing as H&M is the world’s third largest fashion chain by revenue, it is surprising that they have not figured a way to bring an online shopping experience to the masses. Most research indicates that it is a matter of cost and logistics as to why H&M cannot easily open an online store for the US, Australia, or any other country outside of Europe. Sales increased by 13% in the three months prior to the end of August, but that was still below the expectations of the street. Some speculate that warmer than average weather in Europe resulted in less people needing to shop for clothes over the summer. Overall H&M continues to perform very well and appears to have a ton of upside if they can expand and offer online shopping outside of Europe.
