Amazon lowered the price of their extremely popular Kindle product and announced a new model in the e-reader line which will allow users in over 100 countries to download content in English via a wireless connection. Now U.S. travelers overseas and expatriates will be able to obtain all of the great content they want to read in many foreign countries. No longer do people in many parts of the world have to wait for weeks to receive their book because this advance in ecommerce closes the gap.
People using the international Kindle, which starts shipping on October 19, will only have access to a little over 50% of the content that people in the U.S. have, but more titles will come soon. Prices for books in the U.S. or internationally are expected to be very similar and there are already plans to bring the nicer Kindle DX to the international market next year. The change will make it so easy for people overseas to use their Kindle as they no longer have to transfer content from the U.S. based Amazon account to their Kindle. This model is expected to cost $279 and customers should be prepared for them to be a hot seller during the holiday season.
The entry level Kindle model from Amazon will now run consumers $40 less for a more affordable price of $259. Even at that price point it is still a bit expensive as competitors are trying to gain market share by releasing comparable products at a lower price point. Only time will tell if the Kindle can maintain dominance in the market with their 60% market share. Long term, it has been stated by Amazon founder Bezos’, that the goal is to make any book ever printed available to Kindle users so they can have any title they want available in just minutes anywhere they can get online.
