Walmart is well known around the world for operating thousands of brick and mortar retail stores. Lately all the buzz about Walmart has revolved around their online ecommerce website. Earlier in the summer the big announcement was regarding the expansion of over 1,000,000 new products as part of partnerships with third party vendors. Now Walmart wants to try and capture even more market share as this week they announced an expansion into selling personal care products. Most of the new products focus on health and beauty, but they will now offer items like diapers and over the counter medicine.
Walmart is not only trying to take away business from their top online competitor Amazon.com, but Drugstore.com could also be impacted. With all of the power and money behind Walmart, it will be tough for many online retailers to put up much of a fight. Shipping will cost you just 97 cents per item and now you can shop for more via the convenience of your home. Some of the top personal care brands you can now buy via their ecommerce store are Neutrogena, Pampers, L’Oreal, Colgate and Gillette. One of the few things left for Walmart to offer online is groceries, which again would put it in a direct battle with Amazon who has been working on that segment of the market for a couple of years now. Industry analysts will be watching consumer behavior to see if they really flock to the ecommerce site more often or if they continue to go with a long time Internet retailer like Amazon.
