It might be all of the great deals that online retailers like Amazon.com are offering customers this holiday season, or it may be the snow storm on the East coast that resulted in higher than normal sales last weekend. Promotions like free shipping and major discounts on numerous products have made it so easy for people to shop online this holiday season and get the same deals, if not better deals, than they would get in a traditional retail store. In addition, consumers get to save time, money, and stress as they avoid the crowds and keep their car parked at home while they shop online from the comfort and warmth of their own home. Many east coast shoppers who were either procrastinating or waiting to get paid on December 15th planned to shop this last weekend, but the snowstorm didn’t encourage as many shoppers to brave the harsh winter weather. Amazon.com in particular looks to have seen a bump in activity over the last weekend despite it being a time when sales start to decline a bit over prior weeks. This could also be due to the record breaking sales of their Kindle ereader or guarantees on various forms of free shipping late into the holiday season.
Regardless of what is causing the increase in online sales this holiday season, it is a very positive sign for online retailers looking forward to 2010. As consumers become tighter with their money and look for a bargain on almost everything they buy, it is only logical that they would flock online to search and compare the best deals. Not having to put extra miles on your car, spend money on gas, and waste extra time shopping are all big positives that keep winning more and more consumers over. Numbers should be released early next year so we can see how well the big online retailers performed for the fourth quarter of 2009.
