Yesterday Google announced the launch of their new smart phone called Nexus, but that was not the big news in the minds of most people. The most interesting part of this announcement was the launch of a Google ecommerce store for their Nexus phone. Google has taken a step which other smart phone carriers have not and that is to let you purchase the phone without attaching it to any a phone service. This means you just have to use your own SIM card from your cell phone carrier to make it work. An ecommerce store like this just for a phone could have a big impact on the current US carrier model that customers are accustomed to dealing with now. Essentially the Nexus phone from Google has no preference for a particular mobile carrier, therefore it is interchangeable among carriers. You can also buy the phone with T-Mobile services if you like, but the phone by itself is currently selling for $529.00 at the Google Phone Store.
The biggest force in ecommerce for mobile so far would have to be iTunes, but this new twist from Google might cause other smart phone manufactures to also make their devices open to any US carrier. Most people tend to go to a local mobile phone store to buy their smart phones, but this trend might help shift more people to browsing and buying their phones online. However one thing to note is that this Nexus phone is really only for the US market, despite being called the “world’s first carrier-independent smart phone store”. Many people are wondering how popular this phone will be at $529.00 when they can partner with a US carrier and get an iPhone for as low as $199. 2010 is looking to be a very important year for smart phones and mobile commerce and as the market becomes more competitive, consumers should benefit.
