The tech savvy shoppers are advancing their skills every day as more consumers are able to access ecommerce sites via smart phones and a broadband Internet connection. Having such easy access to fast Internet connectivity is not only improving things for consumers, but forcing retailers to become more sophisticated regarding online marketing. Technologies are advancing almost daily and shoppers are catching on quick and trying to become more high-tech so they get the best overall deal on every purchase they make. Recently, IBM conducted a survey of over 32,000 consumers from all over the world where they determined that 79% want to use ecommerce websites to find and print relevant coupons. In terms of mobile, shoppers like to use their phone to find store locations, or see what is in stock before they go to the store. 2010 should also see many more people using their mobile phones to make purchases from sites like Ebay or Amazon.
While most would think that it is great to be a savvy shopper, it does not always translate well for some retailers who are not as sophisticated. For example if a consumer wants a specific item and cannot find it at their “go-to” online store, then they have no problem finding the store that has it and ordering it from them. Also, consumers who are heavy Internet users at home and on their mobile phones can get very upset if they get incorrect information as they trust what they read is accurate. There will be hundreds of mobile apps focusing on ecommerce which will be coming out to consumers in 2010, which will allow them to become even better online shoppers. The bottom line is that retailers need to stay up to speed on what is going on with consumers so that they do not lose out to a more tech savvy online store.
