The mobile commerce sector has been heating up in the U.S. over the past two years, jumping from revenues of only $396 million in 2008 to an astounding $1.2 billion in 2009. However this growth is still a bit behind Europe, where consumers have been able to embrace mcommerce more in their daily lives. In fact a recent study from ABI Research indicates that the mcommerce revenues in Europe will exceed that of the U.S. by the close of 2010. Most people may think that either Europe or the U.S. are the leaders in mcommerce revenues, but Japan is years ahead of both countries in their technology and adopting of mcommerce. Mobile revenues were $20 billion in 2009, and are expected to still have room to grow over the next few years in Japan. Ecommerce has been the main channel for consumers to research and buy real or virtual goods online, however mcommerce is quickly becoming a worthy competitor, or complimentary channel depending on how you view the situation.
One of the most interesting insights from the ABI research was that they expect to see overall mcommerce revenues to be approximately $119 billion by 2015. As smart phone technology advances, it makes sense that more people will adopt the shopping medium, just as they did for ecommerce 10 years ago. Another thing to note is that the mobile phone is used as more of an all-in-one resource in underdeveloped countries, because it is more easily accessible than a standard computer. 2010 will see many advances in the mobile commerce space, as the smart phone battle continues, and more consumers in the U.S. and Europe upgrade to a smart phone.
