Recently released data from the eBillme Online Spending Index (quarterly survey conducted by Javelin Strategy & Research) indicates that online shoppers in the U.S. intend to spend 8% more in Q3 2010, as compared to Q2 2010. This is an average spend of $271.77 online per customer over the next 90 days. Additionally their data concludes that online shoppers in the U.S. will spend 20% more in Q3 2010, as compared to Q3 2009. Despite the eBillme Online Spending Index only being around since Q3 2008, the data is very useful and informative about the changes in consumer confidence. There has been a strong economic recovery this year, but consumers are still being cautious with their online spending, regardless of the U.S. economic improvements. However things are trending in the right direction for Q3 this year, and this could carry over into Q4 which would bode well for online businesses who count on the last quarter of the year to get them into the black.
The eBillme Online Spending Index for Q3 2010 also looked into the spending projections for the Back To School shopping season, which turned up some very useful and promising data. Consumers projected online spending for Q3 2010 indicates that 17% of online shoppers intend to spend more this year on back to school supplies. The more interesting data point is that 21% of the online shoppers are shifting to buying their school supplies online, as opposed to shopping at a traditional retail store. Merchants should take this data into account, as they could start to see an uptick in online sales as we get deeper into Q3.
