Amazon recently reported that growth rate of Kindle ereader sales has tripled since they dropped the price from $259 to $189, and this may be the reason why the Amazon Kindle is now sold out on their ecommerce site. Bloomberg.com reported back in late May that Amazon was expected to come out with a new thinner Kindle in August, which is just around the corner. The Kindle selling out at the end of July has created a buzz online that it may signal the upcoming launch of the next generation model. Currently when shoppers visit Amazon.com they can still purchase the larger Kindle DX, but the smaller Kindle 2 is set to be temporarily out of stock with no estimates of a potential delivery date. This lack of inventory could hurt their online sales, as competing ereaders and the iPad are currently available for consumers.
Demand for ebooks has picked up over the past few months, as Amazon reported that sales of ebooks were outpacing hardcover books. This may have helped fuel the online sales for the Kindle that caused it to sell out, or it may indicate that Amazon wanted to deplete their inventory so that they could debut the next generation Kindle in August. As the 2010 holiday shopping season approaches, companies like Borders and Barnes and Noble gear up to go battle Amazon for consumers who intend to purchase a ereader before the year is over. Amazon has led the way thus far, and the release of a new Kindle model could help them to maintain their position atop the pack. Consumers who were anxious to buy a Kindle will now have to wait and see if a new Kindle ereader will soon premier.
