Internet rumors look to be turning into reality, as the Wall Street Journal is confirming that Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos is planning to go “mass market” by debuting a new Kindle, with a lower entry level price point. The ereader market has been heating up over the last couple months, as all the major players have dropped the prices on their devices making them more attractive to the masses. Now Amazon is looking to solidify their position atop the ereader and ebook market by offering a new Kindle which is smaller, has better battery life, and an improved gray-scale contrast. The Wi-Fi & 3G version of the new Kindle will retail for $189, which is in line with the existing pricing. However there is also a cheaper Wi-Fi only model for $139 that is sure to draw attention, as consumers who were on the fence about purchasing an ereader now do not have to invest much money to get started.
Many avid readers have been staying true to traditional paperback and hardback books, but the popularity of ebooks and ereaders is causing a shift in the market which is driving more consumers to go digital. Consumers who want to get their hands on the newest Kindle will have to wait until it begins shipping on August 27, but starting tomorrow they can at least secure their order in advance on Amazon.com. The new Kindle with a cheaper price point will definitely put the pressure on competing ereaders, as they will have to decide if they want to adjust their prices again to stay on par with Amazon.
