Amazon founder and CEO Jeff Bezos has been leading the way in the ebook and ereader space with the Kindle, which has been the #1 bestselling item on the site for the last two years. Bezos is so excited about the product that last night he had a letter he wrote to customers overtake the Amazon.com homepage to announce the debut of the third generation Kindle ereader. Customers can now go online and get in their pre-orders for the third generation Kindle, which is set to ship starting on August 27. The second generation Kindle sold out early yesterday, and it started rumors that Amazon might be preparing the launch of the new Kindle, and that is exactly what happened. The official press release went out yesterday with all of the information on pricing and details about the features of the third generation Kindle. In an effort to make the Kindle an even bigger sales success, Amazon has lowered the entry level price point to only $139 for a Wi-Fi only version. Additionally there is a traditional Wi-Fi and 3G version of the third generation Kindle priced at $189.
Not only does the new Kindle have a lower price point, but it also has improved features that will allow it to attract new customers. The first thing to note is that the new electronic-ink screen has 50% better contrast than any other ereader, plus it has a sleeker design which results in a body that is 21% smaller. The ereader still has a 6-inch reading area, but it is now 15% lighter which puts it at only 8.7 ounces. Another enhancement to the new Kindle is that it can turn pages 20% faster, and has an extended battery life which can last up to one month. Overall customers should be very impressed with the new Kindle, and it should allow Amazon to continue to lead the way in ereader and ebook sales.
