The face of ecommerce in China is shifting, as more consumers acquire credit cards, become comfortable with the Internet, and get familiar with the world of online shopping. Recent data from a Nielsen Online survey indicates that consumers in China are heavy online shoppers in the Asia Pacific region, with roughly 95% of them reporting that they plan to make a web purchase in the next six months. Some of the most popular areas where they plan to shop online are in clothing, books, shoes, and accessories. While the online consumers in China are the most likely to purchase clothing online in the Asia Pacific region, they were followed closely by other countries like South Korea and the Philippines. The number of Internet users in China is growing quickly each year, but the Internet penetration rate is still much lower than other countries. Therefore there is still a lot of room for ecommerce growth in the country, as more consumers have yet to jump online to start making purchases.
This Nielsen report looked at total online spending in a number of countries throughout the world, and while China and South Korea ranked at the top for consumers making the most purchases online, there were also some key countries on the bottom of the list. Online consumers in Australia, Hong Kong, New Zealand and Malaysia came in as the countries that make the least number of online purchases. Not only are consumers enjoying ecommerce more in China, but so are retailers who are moving online to help with their overall sales. Very few of the top 1000 retailers in China have an ecommerce store, but the shift in consumer habits is driving more of those retailers to create an online store.
