Over the last year, the buzz about Foursquare has continued to grow as more people tap into the location based social networking site with their smartphones so they can “check-in” at all the places they go. Users of Foursquare try to gain the most digital check-ins at one location to become Mayor of that spot, and they also try and gain various badges for checking in. Some of the badges include the Bender badge for checking in at the same spot 4 nights in a row, the Superstar badge is awarded for checking in at 50 different locations, and the Super Mayor badge for those Foursquare players who are the mayor of 10 locations at once. Most people who do not play Foursquare have no idea what it is all about and what these badges mean, but now the company has opened up a new ecommerce shop to sell some gear. The gear for sale at the Foursquare ecommerce shop will allow players to show off the social network when they’re out and about in the city checking in.
Currently there are only 8 items for sale in the Foursquare ecommerce shop and 2 of those are limited editions, additionally there is a contest underway for fans to vote on the next limited edition t-shirt badge design. The two existing limited edition t-shirt designs are the Japanese Logo T-Shirt and the I Heart Badges T-Shirt, and it is unclear how long these designs will be around. They also sell the standard Foursquare logo t-shirt, a Mayor crown t-shirt, and badge buttons and stickers. It is unlikely that the ecommerce store will be a major revenue driver for Foursquare, but at least the die hard fans can now get the gear if they desire.
