Target has been a hot topic in the news over the past month, as a boycott began shortly after they made donations to a group that opposes same-sex marriage and other various rights for gay and lesbian citizens. There have been flash mobs inside Target stores, a number of protests, and even a Facebook fan page about the Target Boycott that already has over 76,000 fans. This social media driven boycott has definitely put a dent in Target’s image and it is still unclear whether Target will speak out about it, or continue to amp up their own marketing efforts to counter the damage done. Despite this social media attack, today there is some good news about Target and Facebook, as it was announced that the retailer would be the first to sell Facebook Credits gift cards in a brick and mortar store. Facebook Credits are slowly rising in popularity, as users become comfortable using the credits, and more social game and application developers adopt the digital currency. Starting on September 5, Target stores across the U.S. will start to carry three different Facebook Credits gift cards, with values of $15, $25, and $50.
As social gaming increases in popularity, it is likely that the use of Facebook Credits will become more common, as more gamers will want to purchase virtual goods to help them excel. Facebook Credits have been around for a year, and hopefully the availability of their gift cards at hundreds of Target stores will help to bring them to the masses. It will now be much easier, around the holiday shopping season, for people to purchase these gifts cards for friends and family who love to play social games. Similar gaming cards have been sold for some time at places like Walgreens and 7-11, so it is likely that Facebook will soon roll out their gift cards to other retailers in the near future.
