In January 2009, SundaySky announced that they had completed an $8 million Series A round of funding led by Carmel Ventures and Globespan Capital Partners. Now the innovative dynamically generated video company is getting buzz in the news again as they announced that they have raised even more money via a $9 million second round of funding led by Norwest Venture Partners, with additional investments from Carmel Ventures and Globespan Capital Partners. There are other companies in the space fighting to become the dominant player among e-businesses looking for an automated video solution, but few are funded as well as SundaySky. Animoto has raised around $5 million, but with SundaySky now at $17 million in total funding, it looks like they will be the company that others will be chasing. Sites like Overstock.com are already utilizing the technology from SundaySky for a variety of products on their ecommerce site, and more ecommerce companies are starting to realize the potential and test these types of automated videos out.
The new round of funding will allow SundaySky to take their video platform to the next level, and make improvements to the real-time technology, so that it is even more valuable to their customers. Additionally SundaySky is looking to use the extra funding to elevate their marketing efforts, so that they can expand their reach and close deals with a wider variety of e-businesses. Currently the video technology is more focused toward the ecommerce merchant, as it is easiest for them to see the return on their investment via increases in sales for products with SundaySky videos. However the SundaySky video technology has potential to be used on more than ecommerce sites, as it is a way to create a deeper interaction with consumers, help increase rankings in search engines, and improve the ROI on your marketing budget.

There are literally hundreds of books on dating that men can purchase to help them improve their game when it comes to meeting women, however there is only one dating book for men written by Mike ‘The Situation’ Sorrentino. The Situation, as he likes to call himself, is one of the most popular characters on the MTV show Jersey Shore, which features a group of young adults partying it up Jersey style. This new book from The Situation is surprisingly called ‘Here’s the Situation,’ which is the go to ‘Guide to Creeping on Chicks, Avoiding Grenades, and Getting in Your GTL on the Jersey Shore.’ Fans of ‘The Situation’ can pre-order ‘Here’s the Situation’ for only $10.12, or pick it up in stores when it comes out on November 2.
While other dating books teach a more traditional approach to attracting the right woman, ‘Here’s the Situation’ wants to educate readers with a more unique approach. One of the first things you have to do is become accustomed to utilizing the GTL, which is hitting the gym, going tanning, and always having fresh laundry so you can look your best when out at the club. Additionally you will learn about the GTL Remix, which dives into additional personal grooming that will help you to get girls who are not grenades (aka unattractive girls). All of which is intended to take your game with women to the next level, so that you can become a true ladies man. If you also want some tips on hitting the gym so you can have abs like ‘The Situation,’ then pre-order his exercise DVD, The Situation Workout.
The Jersey Shore kids are working hard to take their fame to the next level, by making their names into personal brands. The Situation has so far been the most successful in this endeavor, but over the holidays fans are expecting many more products from Jersey Shore stars to appear online.

If you run an online store and have noticed an unseasonal increase in sales, it might be due to more shoppers in Australia taking to the Internet to buy products online from the U.S. and Canada. The Aussie dollar stood at 97.34 US cents Sunday night, which means that Australian shoppers can get more for their money if they buy online. A report released by PerthNow.com.au last week stated:
bargain hunters can save hundreds of dollars. Budget-conscious parents can snap up a Bugaboo Bee Stroller, costing $1119.95 here, for $969.94 (including fees and shipping), on the Price USA website. If you can wait for a week or two for a book, purchasing it on Amazon can save $10.
CommSec chief economist Craig James believes that the Aussie dollar may continue to grow, thus sending even more shoppers to the Internet to find deals from U.S. merchants. In fact, eBay Australia reports that sales its UK and U.S. sites skyrocketed by 60% every time the Aussie dollar soared. While the U.S. provides a variety of great deals for Australian based online shoppers, James urges people to also search local sites in their own backyard before sending money out of the country. The Australian economy has only recently begun its recovery from a poor economy and pumping money back into the country is the best way to ensure a full rebound.
Australian Retailers’ Association Russell Zimmerman said that the dollar rise is a double-edged sword.
The real problem is that we are getting a deflation in the price of goods. For electrical goods, it’s a 25 to 30 per cent deflation. You have to get more products through your door to maintain a dollar margin that you are used to.” Only time will tell whether these changes will help or hinder the economy in Australia, but for now, consumers are following trends of the U.S. by finding the best possible bargains online.

2009 was not a fruitful year for the pumpkin industry, as heavy rains poured down for 13 days during the height of picking season, resulting in mass destruction of much of the crops. Nestle owned Libby’s is the most popular brand name in the U.S. when it comes to canned pumpkin, and the rains of 2009 severely dampened their output, which caused a major shortage of canned pumpkin last year. A couple weeks ago, people started to put up cans of Libby’s on eBay when they heard that it was going to take a little time before canned pumpkin inventory could meet the consumer demand for the upcoming holiday season. Prices on eBay and Amazon are a bit inflated, with the range being roughly $6 to $30 for a single can of Libby’s. This seems a bit crazy for canned pumpkin as it is slowly rolling onto store shelves, for around $2 a can. However reports from around the U.S. indicate that it is not that easy to pick up canned pumpkin right now at local supermarkets.
Some consumers who are avid pumpkin bakers around the holidays have actually had to hunt down canned pumpkin by traveling to a variety of local supermarkets, so they can save money instead of bidding for cans on eBay. So if you have big plans for pumpkin baking soon, you might want to see what you can get locally or else you will have to pay a premium price on eBay or Amazon to get the canned pumpkin you need. Luckily the frequency of eBay postings has declined, as sellers are realizing that canned pumpkin is slowly making its way back onto supermarket shelves.

It seems that almost every week there is a new eBay auction that stands out in the news, and there are usually a few characteristics which cause an eBay auction to get serious buzz in the media. The three characteristics which can help to have an eBay auction get media attention is to have it be celebrity related, be very expensive, or be extremely rare or one of a kind. A current auction on eBay for Dr. Seuss (aka Theodor Seuss Geisel) taxidermy statues hits all three of this characteristics, and as a result it has become a hot topic in the news. The extremely rare set of Dr. Seuss taxidermy statues, is thought to be the only complete set in the entire world, and it can be yours for the low “buy now” price of $1 million. So far there have been some offers for the Dr. Seuss taxidermy statues, but none have come anywhere close to the asking price of $1 million.
The Dr. Seuss taxidermy statues were created in 1938, and they include three unique characters (Abelard, Gustard, and a Unicorn) which are still in great condition for being over 70 years old. The taxidermy characters will look very familiar to any Dr. Suess fans, as many characters that were used in Dr. Seuss books were based upon these early designs. These taxidermy statues were so popular that there were limited edition reproductions of them created, which still sell for $15,000 to $28,000. However the seller goes into great detail to explain how these taxidermy statues are not the limited edition reproductions, and in fact are the original copies. As of now it is unclear if anyone will bite and bid the $1 million asking price for the extremely rare Dr Seuss taxidermy statues, but if they do, they should expect to have a bit of an adventure. This is because the the winner of this rare collection and a guest will be flown to the Chateau where the buyer can oversee the packing, and transport the pieces safely away. Travel and lodging for three nights in the Castle’s Romantic and luxurious Tower suite is included courtesy of Animazing Gallery.

When most people think of iTunes they typically think of an online music store that is a go to source to purchase the most popular songs of the moment, or favorites songs from the last 50 years. However most do not associate iTunes with being a destination to purchase classical music, and that is where the new ecommerce store Ariama is looking to carve out their niche. Ariama.com is the product of Sony Music Entertainment, which is positioning the ecommerce site as the premier site to purchase high quality digital downloads or CD’s of classical songs and composers. The new ecommerce store has music available from four major labels, as well as many of smaller independent record labels. Many may question if this niche ecommerce store has a place in the market, but Sony believes that the classical music fan has different needs, and that Ariama will serve their desires in a number of ways.
One of the selling points of Ariama is that the downloads are extremely high-quality, at 320 kbps, whereas Apple only recently updated their digital music catalog to 256 kbps in 2009. Audio quality is paramount for the classical music fan, and being able to download music at 320 kbps will provide a more true classical sound. Additionally the conventional ecommerce stores do not tend to focus much on their classical catalog, and as a result they do not have the extensive selection that Ariama provides consumers. The other benefit of Ariama is that classical music fans can also pick up a traditional CD if they desire, as many consumers like to have the CD, as well as a digital copy. Ariama is only available to consumers in the United States as of now, but Sony has a long term vision to expand it to European markets. Sony has had a variety of failed ventures over the years, but we will have to give Ariama a chance to see if it will be a hit with classical music fans.

Online shoppers love to get a great deal, and will often spend extra time hunting for the best price so they can save as much money as possible. Comparison shopping sites are popular among consumers because they can see a range of ecommerce sites that offer the same product. Then they can determine if they want to go with the lowest price, or pay a bit more to use an ecommerce site which has a higher trust level. However some consumers are not happy with comparison shopping to find the lowest price, and will often turn to online auctions to see if they can get an even better deal. The go-to online auction site for most people is eBay, but over the past couple years a new generation of auction sites have popped up to entice consumers away from eBay, and sites like it. These auction sites have a very different business model, as they often offer items for mere pennies and as such have been dubbed “penny auctions.”
Not all penny auction sites are the same, but the most common concept that holds true is that users create an account and then can purchase bids with a debit or credit card. The price per bid can vary, and often the penny auction sites give a better discount if you buy bids in bulk. Typically bids cost less then $1, which does not sound like much on the surface, until you learn more about how these penny auction sites work. Users of penny auction sites can view a variety of items which have a countdown clock, and each time someone bids, the clock resets so that someone else has a chance to bid. If no one else bids on the item, then you win, but if someone does bid up the item you still have to pay for the bids you made. This penny auction model can result in the consumer getting a great deal if their timing and bid amount is right, but many people have started to complain to the Better Business Bureau (BBB) as they have not been so happy with their penny auction experience.
The BBB recently put out a press release to make consumers aware of the types of complaints they have been receiving regarding penny auction sites. Some have complained about getting charged $150 when they thought it was a free trial, and others have complained that penny auction sites are using phony bidders to drive up bid prices. Therefore the BBB is encouraging consumers to do their research upfront before they jump into a particular penny auction site trying to get a great deal online. Research includes pulling up the penny auction site on the BBB, and reading all the fine print at the penny auction site regarding the bidding and buying process. Also make sure you know everything you can about what you intend to bid on, as you want to ensure that you are getting a great deal. Lastly if you feel that you have been ripped off by a penny auction site, make sure you reach out to the BBB and file a complaint.

Since Amazon debuted the Kindle they have focused on dominating the ereader and ebook scene, but there have slowly been some fun free apps released that allow you to do more than read books with your ereader. Now the Amazon Kindle has released the first paid app with the addition of Scrabble for $4.99, which was an app created by Electronic Arts (EA). Scrabble has been a very popular paid app on the Apple iPhone and iPad, so it makes sense that Amazon partnered with EA to bring Scrabble to Kindle owners. The new Scrabble app is only compatible with the second and third generations of the Kindle, and DX version. So those Kindle owners who purchased one of the original models are left out on the Scrabble app, unless they decide to upgrade it to one of the newer models.
Kindle ereader owners are already known to be avid readers, as that is why they wanted to own and enjoy an ereader in the first place. Now the option of adding Scrabble to the Kindle ereader makes the device an even more attractive present for the upcoming holiday shopping season. Reviews are very positive of the Scrabble app thus far, and it is so popular that it already hit the #1 spot on the paid app bestseller list for the Amazon Kindle store. It is priced at $4.99, and includes the ability to Pass N’ Play with a friend or to challenge the Kindle computer. Scrabble enthusiasts should be pleased with this digital version of the game, as the two letter list is up-to-date, and the Kindle controller makes it easy to play the game on the device. With Staples and Best Buy selling the Kindle ereader in their stores, this upcoming holiday shopping season should lead to strong sales for the device.

Cobone.com is a daily deal site similar to Groupon and LivingSocial, but focused on a Middle Eastern audience. Rather than competing with already established daily deal sites in the U.S., Cobone.com has established itself around the Middle East as the best site online to find group focused daily deals, and it’s only 2 weeks old!
Cobone.com launched on September 10th at 00:05am Dubai time as the only Middle Eastern competition to GoNabIt.com, the first group buying site in the region. After only 2 weeks of operation, Cobone just broke e-commerce records for the entire Middle East, by clocking 29 sales per minute with its latest deal of 90% off at Vapiano restaurant.
The website is owned by Jabbar Internet Group, which is an umbrella group of platforms such as Souq.com, Sukar.com, and CashU. All heavy hitters in the MENA e-commerce scene. The site is run by Paul Kenny, founder and CEO, who is already riding on a huge win thanks to this latest deal selling one voucher every 2 seconds. Cobone features deals in both English and Arabic, serves 24 cities, and offers discounts from 50%-90%.
Group buying sites continue to be a huge hit wherever they spring up, which is why sites like Groupon are working tirelessly to expand internationally. While Cobone is definitely seeing early success, this quick adoption of group buying deals might make the Middle East a new target destination for Groupon. This could either make Groupon competition to a site like Cobone, or a perfect buyer for the company. Time will only tell as group buying sites continue to evolve and take nations by storm.

You can never underestimate the power of the viral video, and if there is anyone who knows about becoming an overnight success because of a YouTube video, it would have to be Scottish singer Susan Boyle. The singer was an unknown diamond in the rough until she appeared on Britain’s Got Talent in early 2009, and the YouTube video of her singing audition became the must watched viral video across the world. Millions of people instantly became aware of this unlikely singing sensation, as they watched in awe as this unemployed Scottish woman belted out the song “I Dreamed a Dream” from Les Misérables. Now a year and a half later, the most popular YouTube submission of her Britain’s Got Talent audition has been viewed almost 50 million times.
Boyle’s debut album I Dreamed A Dream, has sold over 9 million copies since it premiered in late 2009, and now fans are rushing to pre-order her long awaited second album called The Gift. This new album from Boyle is actually a holiday album, and it has already risen to the top of the bestselling music list on Amazon.com, despite not coming out until November 9. Her new album has surpassed quite a few big names on the Amazon bestselling music chart, jumping ahead of Bob Dylan, Robert Plant, Santana, and Eric Clapton. The audio CD is currently priced at $9.99, and it appears that it will be the must have holiday album for the upcoming season. The first single on the album is a cover of “Perfect Day” by Lou Reed, which she was previously denied the opportunity to sing on “America’s Got Talent.”

Running an online store can be a fun endeavor, as you often get to be your own boss and create your own strategy and goals. However most people do not create an online store purely for fun, as they also want to make money, and maybe even eventually sell their site. Connecticut based Outrageous Ventures Inc. just had this vision come true, as Washington based iStores Inc., recently announced that they had acquired the company for over $1.2 million. Outrageous Ventures is more than just one website, as a visit to their site reveals that they have seven online stores under their corporate umbrella. Below is a list of the online stores listed on Outrageous Ventures that iStores acquired as part of the deal. There could be more sites beyond this as part of the acquisition, but those details are not available.
PrankPlace.com
FunIdeas.com
DrinkStuff.com
FartMart.com
BigMouthToys.com
GagWorks.com
IDontDoMornings.com
The acquisition by iStores looks to be a smart move, as it plays well into their strategy of owning and operating a variety of online stores in different niches. This acquisition involved a bit of change for iStores, as they expect to add 10 employees to their staff, and have closed their indoor paintball facility in order to make room for the new inventory. In looking at the iStores site, it looks like they have plans to continue their acquisitions in the future, as they have a section of their site devoted to it. They list their acquisition criteria for online retailers who have $2 million to $15 million in annual sales, and this could mean big money for anyone interested in selling as their valuation methodology is 3X to 7X EBITDA. This means that iStores will buy 3 to 7 times the EBITDA that an online retailer is generating each year.

The 2011 NFL Super Bowl at Cowboy Stadium is still over four months away, and the current owners of the former home of a convicted Internet drug dealer in Arlington, Texas, are looking to capitalizing on its sale via an online auction. The mansion has an unusual past, as it was seized in 2005 after the arrest of owner, Rakesh Jyoti Saran, because he committed crimes relating to distributing controlled substances via Internet pharmacies. Saran was sentenced in late 2009 to serve 12 years in federal prison, and he was ordered to pay $68 million in restitution for being part of the Internet pharmacy scheme. This sentencing was part of a plea agreement, where Saran forfeited his custom mansion in Arlington. The U.S. Marshals Service sold it in 2008 to an Austin investor for $1.2 million, who later went on to fix up the mansion so that it was in livable condition. It was vacant for two years, so got beat up during that time, but now the seven-bedroom, eight-bathroom and four and a half-bathroom home on 2.6 acres is ready to go to the online auction block.
While the residence has been listed on the market for over a year, it has not had any qualified buyers come to the table because of the rough economic conditions and rocky housing market. Therefore the home is set to be auctioned online next month on October 5, with a pre-bid of $50,000 being required so they can help eliminate those buyers who are not qualified. The hope is that the home will sell for over $3 million, and one of the big selling points could be the close proximity to Cowboy Stadium, which is home to the 2011 NFL Super Bowl on February 6, 2011. This is one of the biggest homes in Tarrant county, and the winning bidder could get a great deal on this Texas mansion.

Over the last six weeks, there has been a massive amount of online buzz around the new Amazon Kindle ereaders that debuted at the end of July. Much of the chatter has revolved around the Kindle shipping dates, as Amazon has had extreme difficulty keeping up with consumer demand since they first premiered in late July. Throughout August and the first part of September, the shipping dates for both versions of the new Kindle 3g+WiFi & Kindle WiFi kept being pushed further out. In addition to the buzz around the shipping dates, there have also been recent reports that the popular Kindle ereader will soon be sold at Best Buy and Staples. Overall it seems like Amazon is gearing up for the upcoming holiday shopping season, so that they can ensure that the Kindle continues to dominate the ereader market.
On Amazon yesterday, they made it clear that the delayed shipping is no longer an issue for those consumers who want to purchase a Kindle ereader. Either model looks ready to ship, as you could snag one day shipping on the item, which means that Amazon must have adequate stock to meet consumer demand for a bit. Last year, many of the ereaders in the market had inventory issues around the holiday shopping season, so it looks like Amazon wants to avoid that scenario at all costs. If they can keep a constant supply of Kindles in stock throughout the remainder of the year, then it is almost guaranteed that the Kindle will continue to be the number one ereader in the market.

Ecommerce is heating up in 2010, as many companies and organizations have decided to launch their first online store this year. Now Mormontimes.com is reporting that The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has unofficially opened a new online store. This new site has already had thousands of visitors, as people are excited to see the storefront and what they have for sale. The LDS Church online store does not officially open for global business until September 30, and expectations are that this will be a major online shopping destination for Mormons around the world who want to connect with the church direct. It will be the first time that Mormons from around the world will be able to directly make purchases from The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
At the bottom of the LDS online store, it notes that the site is still in BETA, but overall everything seems to function just as it should. One of the most anticipated aspects of this new LDS online store is that the scriptures, study aids, and all of the reading material, looks to be offered in a number of different languages. This allows for Mormons around the world to have material in their native language, so they can more easily learn about the religion. The online store also has temple clothing, art, music, and movies, that all revolve around the Mormon faith. It is reported that the online store is already available for 56 countries to make purchases. This is just the beginning, as the LDS online store plans to continually update and improve the site based on feedback they receive from users.
