Zen Cart is a free shopping cart solution built off of the osCommerce framework. This PHP based open source shopping cart runs on a MYSQL database, so merchants using this free cart often have PHP and development skills or work with a developer to get their online store up and running. Zen Cart can be implemented into an existing website or can be used to create a full featured online store. Because Zen Cart requires development knowledge, merchants prefer to work with a hosting company like Dreamhost or Just Host, who provide an easy one-click install of Zen Cart for free. I have am using Zen Cart as I speak for my site ( http://www.fire-toys.com ) and it is seeming to work, although there is a lot of little details I have to keep looking up along the way, bc I am a designer and not a php developer.
The one good thing is the Zen cart is so widely been used that every question i’ve had, I’ve been able to answer.
I’d say its a great solution for a small / new business owner, although once my store is at its peak, I may pay for a new server hosting and then get magneto. I’ve read and heard magneto is a lot more friendly and up to date.

Zen Cart is my first preference, Once you learn to get around (which can take a while), it is easy to use and very rich in features, very good forum support.

I don't think Zen Cart is great for a small business. It's great if you have technical skills but the vast majority of small businesses don't, they need a more turn key solution.

I'll use it again. Just did my first store with this cart. Got a web page job and, as usual, owner doesn't want to pay all the monthly fees of a web host kiosk store, their old web guy gave up 1/2 way through and left a huge mess. Thier host had zen cart as a free add on, so I tried it, and it works great.

It will take a good bit of learning and some basic web page knowledge, and an ability to keep track of a pretty complex system of multiple file dynamically created web page operations, but is very workable an functional.
However, I purchased the book they advertise all over the demo and web site, and it was just a waste of money, and gave only a few, almost vague references on the very very basics, it is in no way a manual! Their help pages and wiki have a lot more info. I hope they make the money off that book, at least that way I can consider it a donation for a very good free software!

My rating for Zen Cart is a 3 out of 5 and I would recommend it as a solution to start off with for any small to medium business owners.
